UPI will work slightly differently from August 1: Here’s what’s changing

Starting August 1, you might notice some changes in how you use UPI on apps like Google Pay and PhonePe. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is introducing a series of backend updates to improve how UPI manages balance checks, autopay requests, payment failures, and account verifications. While these changes aren’t drastic, frequent UPI users will want to be aware of what’s new.

  Quicker Updates on Failed Payments

We’ve all experienced UPI transactions that get stuck—money leaves your account, but the recipient doesn’t get it. To address this, NPCI is tightening response times. From next month, UPI apps must display the final status (success or failure) of a payment within seconds, rather than leaving it as “Processing” or “Pending” for several minutes. This means less confusion and fewer screenshots sent to vendors.

Scheduled UPI Autopay Requests

If you use UPI Autopay for things like subscriptions, rent, or SIPs, those requests will now be sent during specific hours. Starting August 1, UPI apps will process these requests between 12 AM and 7 AM, aiming to reduce server congestion and delays during busy hours. You’ll still get notifications—just expect them earlier in the day.

Daily Limit on Balance Checks

Balance inquiries, especially those using biometrics like Face ID or fingerprint, can put a strain on the system. To prevent overload, NPCI is introducing a daily cap on how many times you can check your balance. The exact limit hasn’t been announced yet, but this move targets misuse by bots or excessive checking.

Enhanced Security for Linking Accounts

Linking a new bank account to your UPI app will now involve stricter verification. Banks may require additional steps to confirm ownership, adding some friction but also reducing the risk of errors or fraud.

Overall, these updates are designed to make UPI smoother, more secure, and less frustrating—especially during busy times or when payments fail. You won’t need to change your habits, but from August 1, you’ll likely notice UPI working a bit more efficiently.
