The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for assessment year 2025–26 from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025.

The extension comes in response to significant changes in the notified ITR forms for the year. According to the CBDT, these forms have undergone “structural and content revisions aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting.”

In a press release dated May 27, the board said the changes necessitated “additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities.” It also noted that TDS statement credits due by May 31 would only begin reflecting in early June, which would have “limited the effective window for return filing in the absence of such extension.”

The department noted that additional time is required for system development, integration, and testing of e-filing utilities. Moreover, TDS credits due by May 31 are expected to start reflecting in early June, which could shorten the effective filing window without an extension.

“To facilitate a smooth and convenient filing experience for taxpayers,” CBDT stated, the extension will allow sufficient time for stakeholders to comply with the updated forms and utilities.

A formal notification will be issued separately, CBDT said.

The extension is expected to address stakeholder concerns and help maintain the accuracy and integrity of the return filing process.
